About Painting at Night
As part of the Artist/Mother Podcast Community’s ongoing work to bring exposure to and provide opportunities for artists who are also mothers, the A/MP is seeking submissions for their annual group exhibition! The theme for this exhibition was accumulated during episode 28 of the A/M Podcast, a conversation between host, Kaylan Buteyn, and artist Allison Reimus. In the episode, Allison recalls the time she read a statement in a New York Times article about how “You can’t paint at night in your kitchen and hope to be a good artist. It doesn’t work that way.”

In true Artist/Mother fashion, this seemed like a great statement to respond to for a group show, as an act of resistance and rejection. To imply that good art cannot be made in domestic spaces, or that a person cannot claim the title of artist without meeting arbitrary requirements is a patriarchal myth, one that artists who are mothers have been resisting for decades. For this show, we would like you to offer a response, addressing the ways you are making excellent and inspiring work while also navigating your role as a mother. The work may respond to thematic obstacles such as domestic duties, lack of childcare, restraints on time, limited support, lack of space or resources. Show us, through the work, how you are “Painting at Night”- making art as an Artist/Mother.

Painting at Night is the A/MP annual open call. The first exhibition took place in 2019 at Fort Houston Gallery in Nashville, TN and this one will take place at Artlink in Fort Wayne, IN. The exhibition has no defined expectation for type or style of work that will be considered or selected. Kaylan will be considering all submissions to the group show for artists to feature on the A/MP social media feed and for future podcast interviews. She will also be publishing a show catalogue, which your work will appear in.

About the Juror
Melanie Cooper Pennington teaches sculpture in Bloomington at Indiana University. Tired of fitting sculpture around her work as an interior designer in Chicago, after 12 years she left design and transitioned to graduate school to focus full time on her sculpture practice. With the loving support of her partner and 2 kids, she received her MFA in 2016 and has not looked back. She still practices interior design, is a barre workout devotee, walks dogs and cats and acts as the emotional center for her family. Her motto is “more is more.” Click here to view Melanie’s website.

About Artist/Mother Podcast
What started as a podcast has morphed into a big, bold, beautiful community. In December 2018, Kaylan started recording episodes from her living room…reaching out to the small circle of artists who were mother’s that she knew and asking to hear more about their story. Episodes were released beginning in February of 2019 and within a few weeks artist/mothers from all over started reaching out and connecting. The rest, as they say, is sort of history… a retreat happened, a Crit group was formed and we have grown our community and tweaked our offerings and hope to continue to do this work for many many years to come. As long as there will be people making art there will be mothers making art and we hope there is always a space to uplift and support their art practices and well being.

While our community is rooted in the artist/mother identity, we want to support any female-identifying artist in the world…artists of all backgrounds, mediums and education levels. We don’t believe you have to be a mother, to be a mother-er and we believe every artist in every phase of their career needs community and has something of value. We welcome trans and cis women as well as genderqueer, and non-binary people. Black Lives Matter in this community and we hope our podcast and programming alway represent the underrepresented in our society and provides all of us a place to gather, grow, and share our stories and art practices.
